In this Autumn/Winter 2019 collection titled “Cotton is Queen”, fashion label IAMISIGO explores the relationship between spirituality and the power of textiles and design.
The collection is inspired by the East African legend of Queen Nyabingi, who was revered as a powerful ancestor in East Africa and who spoke through priestesses called Bagirwa.
According to IAMISIGO, pieces from the collection are 100 percent unbleached plain and twill weave canvas cotton with all natural dyes, and are all entirely sourced from West Africa and East Africa.
The collection is rich in symbolism. The colors used in the collection are replete in symbolism, for example, the pink color is made from the Roselle plant associated with Mother Earth and symbolizing femininity, healing and protection against evil spirits, the brown and black are made from the plant Lawsonia inermis, associated with spirituality, the soul’s connection to ancestors, age, maturity and ability.
